The Get the Balance Right Business Framework

I’m excited to tell you about a new thing I’m introducing on the podcast…but I need to tell you the little backstory…

For the last few months I have been in the Thought Leader Academy, which is a group mentoring program that Carol Cox from Speaking Your Brand offers. The focus of the group is to create a signature speech and to support it we are encouraged to develop our own framework.

The framework I created is built around four P’s, Passion, Process, Profit and Purpose, each of these are represented by hearts. These hearts are the lifelines of your business, it’s what makes the whole thing run. Within each of these areas, I’ve developed the framework into four more sections. Graphically the extended framework looks like a uterus and ovaries. But the concept works no matter what body parts you may have.

Because it gets to the core of your business passion and tightens up your processes, increases your profits and allows you the time, energy and knowledge to lead a purpose -driven business. Can you guess what I’m calling this framework? Conjuring my true libra spirit, it’s called Get the Balance Right.

Each week on the show we will dive into the various aspects of the framework to give you actionable tips, which you can start implementing in your business each week. You can view the framework here.

At the Center of the Framework - Value Proposition

In regards to my framework, the Value Proposition is located in the center heart, driven by the entrepreneur’s passion.

According to Entrepreneurship.orgvalue proposition defines the benefits your company's products and services offer to the customer.

And according to Investopedia.comvalue proposition refers to a business or marketing statement that summarizes why a consumer should buy a product or use a service.

For me personally, the Value Proposition should be the ultimate reason why someone would buy what you’re selling over anyone else. It’s where your brand identity converges with a product or service to create a unique offer. I feel it is one of the most important aspects of your business and therefore, at the center of my framework.

Value proposition is the focus of this episode; it's what ultimately separates you from your competition. To discuss this important topic, I am joined by Lisa Princic. She is the host of the Scaling Deep podcast and a membership growth strategist who helps clients generate recurring revenue through membership sites. She also runs an online community called the Membership Lounge. Lisa is also the brainchild and organizer of an upcoming, free, online event called The Profitable Membership Summit.

On this episode, you will be encouraged to think about your own value proposition to develop it for success in the marketplace. Heather (the host), explains the origin of her Get the Balance Right business framework, her devout love of Swatch and how these tie into unlocking your value proposition.

What’s Your Value Proposition?

Thinking about one of your products or services, what is your value proposition? What separates you from your competition? Why would someone want to purchase what you have to offer if they could find it cheaper somewhere else?

A great way to develop your value proposition is to think about companies who do this best. One of my favorites is Swatch; granted, they’re not as prevalent in the United States as they once were, but if you grew up in the 80’s you either had a Swatch or wanted one. And if you had one, you either collected more or wanted more. For those who may be too young to remember the heyday of Swatch, back before cell phones, we wore watches to tell the time. That’s when the Swiss company Swatch was born, who turned these utilitarian devises into affordable and fashionable timepieces. Decked out with colorful bezels and straps, the Swatch became a symbol of the 80’s like the Rubik’s Cube, Jelly Bracelets, and Cabbage Patch Dolls.

The common assumption is that the company’s name came from a combination of Swiss and Watch, but in actuality it stands for Second Watch. I know this because in one of my careers I was a store manager for Swatch. It was a dream come true, because I was a long-time collector and fan. In fact, the globe is filled with people who love their products on a cult-like level.

Their devoted fan base lives on due to Swatch’s Value Proposition. Although their watches have a patented design that you won’t find elsewhere, their value proposition goes far beyond the unique fashion statement, which they created, it’s more of an emotional state of mind that is at the core of the company, which they have labeled Vibe. If you’ve ever worked for Swatch, you would know all about the Vibe. It’s what made Swatch such a fun company to work for. The Vibe is intangible, but I’d describe it as fun, edgy, whimsical.

Therefore, Swatch’s value proposition isn’t just a cool watch, it’s a transformed state of mind. No matter if the Swatch design is sporty, executive, glamourous, artsy, or minimal, what truly separates Swatch from the competition is the Vibe.

Thinking about your products and services, what separates you from your competition? What is your true value proposition?

If you need help figuring this out, I highly recommend using the Value Proposition Canvas from the Strategyzer book series and website. If you would like me to help you develop your value proposition, please set up a strategy coaching session with Heather here.
