The Top Six Frameworks for Speaking

In this episode, Caterina explains how public speaking and workshops will help you get more clients. But if you’re not a fan of speaking, do not fret. A lot of people cringe at the idea of speaking in front of a crowd, in fact it is feared more than death. Public speaking definitely gets easier the more you do it, but in my experience the more prepared I was for a speech, the more confident I was on stage. I’m personally not a fan of winging it. However, many people find it liberating to work off the cuff. Regardless if you like being prepared or improvisational, either approach should still follow a framework that is cohesive for the listener. If you confuse, you lose, right?

In Michael Port’s book, Steal the Show from Speeches to Job Interviews to Deal-Closing Pitches, he explains six widely used frameworks, some of which are centuries old. Here’s a brief summary of each.

1.     The problem/solution framework: Like its name, the idea is to contrast the two by dramatizing and illustrating the problem and then offering a compelling solution.

2.     The numerical framework: This is a popular format, not only for speeches but for blog posts. The framework allows you to break ideas into numerical chunks, like 5 key principles, 7 ways to, and 3 reasons. The numbered points make it easier for people to understand.

3.     The chronological framework: Information is presented in sequential order based on time, logic or importance.

4.     The modular framework: This framework can be used when pulling a section from a larger presentation and using that module as its own stand-alone piece.

5.     The compare and contrast framework: This is best used when wanting to convey the differences between two major subjects or thematic points.

6.     The three-act structure: Created by Aristotle, this universal, tried-and-true framework is based on three parts, one – the situation, two - the conflict, and three – the resolution. So first the audience is presented the circumstances, then the tension and obstacles, then ending with successfully defeating the issue.
